Summer Art Adventures 2019

Join us in the studio for a joyful summer of art-making. Art Adventures run Tuesdays through Thursdays, 9am-Noon. Sessions are offered for ages 5-12. Class size is limited to 8 students. Each day includes a lunch break. Please bring water bottle and lunch. Prices include all materials. Classes fill up quickly, so register today!

DSC05318Session 1: Drawing and Painting

  • July 9, 10, 11
  • 9:00am-Noon
  • Ages 6-12

Develop skills through daily demonstrations and experiments in a variety of media such as acrylic, watercolor, pastel, graphite, ink and charcoal. Working with themes from nature, still life, the figure and abstraction, we will explore how color, line, shape and composition can be used to express our ideas.

Artists such as Van Gogh, O’Keeffe, Theibaud, Kandinsky and more provide inspiration.

Session 2: Sculpture

  • Ages 6-12

Bring your ideas to life in 3-dimensional form with clay, papier mache, wood, wire, cardboard, and more. Artists such as Picasso, Andy Goldsworthy, Marisol, and more will provide inspiration.

  • July 23, 24, 25
  • 9:00am-Noon
  • Ages 5-8

This workshop will include explorations in a variety of drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture techniques appropriate for younger students. Artists such as William Johnson, Paul Klee, Alexander Calder and more will provide inspiration.

Session 4: Arts and Crafts of Mexico

  • July 30, 31, August 1
  • 9:00am-Noon
  • Ages 6-12

In this workshop we will create yarn paintings inspired by the traditional art of the Huichol people, paper cut-outs traditionally made from the bark of the amate tree by the Otomi, bark paintings inspired by the folk art tradition of the Nahua of southern Mexico, and tin ornaments (hojata), a tradition dating back to the 16th century.

Session 5: African Art

  • August 6, 7, 8
  • 9:00am-Noon
  • Ages 6-12

In this workshop we will be inspired by fabric art from Nigeria known as Adire Eleko, which uses a resist technique, as well as mask and animal sculpture traditions from West Africa.

Session 6: Art from the Middle East

  • August 13, 14, 15
  • 9:00am-Noon
  • Ages 6-12

In this workshop, we will explore ancient Egyptian art traditions through the creation of plaster relief sculptures, learn about and create mosaics inspired by ancient works found in Israel, and create paintings inspired by Persian Miniatures, a beautiful and intricate style of narrative painting dating back many centuries.
